Some basics to start

Logging In

To access the computers you need your student reference number; this is your username. Full time students can find this out from any lecturer or their Guidance Tutor, and part time students can find this on their booking receipt.

Your default password is your initials (first name initial is in upper case; surname initial is in lower case) followed by your date of birth in the format DDMMYY. For example John Doe with a date of birth of 20th July 1990 would find his default password to be Jd200790. For more information on passwords, scroll down to the Passwords section.

Your password will need to be changed regularly throughout the academic year. You can find out more information on Password+ on StudentNet. Link to Password+

Logging off

In order to stop others from using your account you must log off. To do this click Start, Log off, and then click Log off again. This will return your computer to the password screen.

Passwords

With more and more of our personal information now online, Aberdeen College is committed to taking all reasonable steps to keep your information safe and secure.

To help the College do this, you will be given a unique username and password. You will be asked for this information when you log-in to PCs, StudentNet, Blackboard and when you check your College email – to make life even simpler, this same username and password will give you access to all the College online services available to you.

However as a security measure your password will expire. This is normal security practice for computers, and is something that both Aberdeen College staff and students have to do. This means you will have to change your password throughout the year.

Passwords at Aberdeen College

When you change your password, there is a certain format that these passwords need to take. Your password must be 6 characters long, with at least one capital letter. You also need to have a minimum of one numeric digit in it – anything from 0-9.

Tips for a strong password

A strong password is one that other people would find hard to guess. This makes it even more secure so your information is safer, so it’s not a good idea to use your name! When you are thinking of a new password, try to think of something which has special, personal significance to you, to help you will remember it. You also need to remember the basics – it must be a minimum of six characters, have a least one number and one capital letter.

When you are changing your password online you will see there is a special bar alongside where you type in your new password. This is designed to help show you when you have got a strong password. Remember the stronger it is the more secure it is so it is a good idea to spend a little time making sure you have got it right.
