Aberdeen College operates a no smoking policy at all sites in and around the buildings.
Smoking is the single biggest cause of cancer in the world. It causes more than a quarter of all cancer deaths in the UK. Smokers not only die younger, they are more likely to suffer a variety of illness at an earlier age.
The longer you smoke the more damage it does, the sooner you stop the better. From the moment you stop your health will start to improve. Giving up tobacco will make you healthier and fitter and it will also save you money.
What’s in cigarette smoke?
The smoke from cigarettes and also pipes and cigars contain a cocktail of thousands of chemicals.
The three main components of tobacco smoke are:
- Nicotine – the drug that makes cigarettes addictive
- Carbon Monoxide – a gas that quickly enters the blood stream, lowering the oxygen supply and contributing to heart disease
- Tar – this is the black particles in tobacco smoke
There are around 70 chemical in tobacco smoke which are known to cause cancer, some of these include;
- Benzene – a solvent used in chemical manufacture, found in petrol fumes
- Formaldehyde – used to embalm dead bodies
- Nitrosamines – chemicals used in pesticides
- Benzopyrene – a hazardous substance used to preserve wood
