Core Skills Profiling

Please go to the following website and login with the username & Password that you have been supplied by your Guidance Tutor.

https://abcol-coreskills.targetskillsgold.com/login

There will be two different parts to the profile you are about to undertake. One will cover Communication; the other Numeracy. Each part of the profile will take about an hour. Don’t worry, it is not an assessment. We want an accurate refection of your everyday skills in these areas so take your time.

Before you begin

I would like to briefly explain why you have been asked to undertake this core skills profile today. We know that you may well have certificates in both these subjects but this profile provides us with the opportunity to have more detailed information about the areas you are particularly good at and those where you might need some extra support. After you have completed this profile, you will not only be given a level but suggestions for work you could do to improve. The results of your profile will be kept on record to allow your class teachers to develop strategies in their classes which will develop those areas in which you are skilled and support those in which you are less comfortable.

Core skills are broad, transferable skills that help to develop the main capabilities people need to be full, active and responsible members of society.

Developing your core skills will help you get the most from education and to be as efficient as you can be at work. They will also help you in other aspects of your lives.

There are five core skills:

  • Communication
  • Numeracy
  • Information Technology
  • Problem Solving
  • Working with others.

For many full time Further Education students, part of your initial induction to college will involve core skills profiling. You will be given an opportunity to complete a profiling exercise in Communications and Numeracy before you embark on your studies. This will allow us to assess your strengths in these particular core areas and promote your development in each as you progress in your course.

During your time at College you will be given lots of opportunities to develop your core skills alongside other subjects that you are studying. Your Guidance Tutor will help you monitor your progress and if you need any support, this will be provided.
